Riding with Blessing: A Newcomer's Journey into the Heart of Motorcycle Culture

by Sara Rupp

As the roar of engines fills the air, Casslyn Holder couldn’t help but feel a sense of exhilaration coursing through her veins. "This is my first group ride, and I'm diving headfirst into the world of motorcycles with Blessing of the Bikes," Holder stated. Little did she know, she was about to embark on an unforgettable journey that would not only ignite her passion for riding but also open her eyes to the incredible community that surrounds it.

Blessing of the Bikes originated in New England in 1972. From its humble beginnings with just eight riders and four motorcycles, Blessing of the Bikes has grown into a beloved tradition that spans generations throughout various communities. For over 30 years, the Word of Grace Church in Tionesta, PA, has faithfully upheld the tradition by organizing and expanding the Blessing of the Bikes event within their community. Their commitment is so strong that even neighboring residents of the church are included in the longstanding tradition, graciously offering their lawns for parking.

The concept of the event is to garner community camaraderie while blessing a safe and joyous season ahead for those motorcyclists. Holder stated, "As we lined up our bikes, I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe at the diversity of people coming together for a common purpose. From seasoned riders to newcomers like myself, it was a sight to behold."

The service is led by various pastors throughout the community. Following the service, attendees partake in communal prayer, a powerful moment of unity joined together in faith. Then, volunteers offer individual blessings, praying over each bike and its rider, imparting a sense of protection and guidance for the adventures ahead.

Holder reflected, "As we set out on our journey, accompanied by a dozen fellow riders from Grace Chapel Community Church, the gravity of this event struck me. Riding 160 miles round trip, narrowly escaping adverse weather, instilled in me a profound sense of pride to be part of such a remarkable experience.”

For most who attend this ride, it is more than just a journey on two wheels. It is a testament to the power of community, faith, and the open road. So here's to many more miles, countless blessings, and the incredible journey that lies ahead.
